The Academic Council was established in 1927 by President Robert Kelley, S.J., as the Council of Loyola University whose purpose was to bring the deans and regents of the schools together to help the president make better informed decisions. The name changed on December 4, 1928, to the Council of Regents and Deans and again in April of 1934 to Academic Council.
